BASS GUITARS: Lodestone Primal
New British guitar company Lodestone has introduced the new Primal 4 and 5-string active basses. The instruments use precision-engineered ceramic bridge saddles. This ultra-hard material – used in the braking systems of racing cars – enhances the transmission of string vibration through the body of the instrument, increasing clarity, dynamics and sustain. Sonic performance is enhanced further by the use of individual custom bridge pieces which are set deep into the body of the instrument, and dual carbon fiber rods which run the length of the neck to eliminate dead spots.
Lodestone’s innovative LaidBack headstock angles the tuners backwards, making them much more accessible for comfortable, convenient tuning. This design also facilitates an optimised string path, further ensuring the integrity of the instrument.
Carefully selected tone woods are used in construction – alder for the body, Indian rosewood for the fingerboard and hard rock maple for the neck, which features a 2-way adjustable truss rod. The contoured body design enables funk players access beneath the strings for dramatic pulls, while the body cutaways combine with a sculpted neck joint to provide easy access to every fret.
EMG Hyperactive pickups are used in a classic J configuration, and are amplified by a custom-designed, Lodestone high-output, low noise active circuit, with controls provided for volume (x2), bass and treble.
All basses are supplied in high quality, padded gig bags, and are available in a range of striking metallic colors. In addition to the Professional Series models, Lodestone also offers an Artist Series in which musicians can choose from a custom menu of timbers, finishes, alternative pickup configurations and other options.
Speaking on behalf of Lodestone, CEO Mark Gooday says “We set out to make a bass that integrates new materials and technologies to make a genuine improvement to the sound and playability of the instrument, without forcing players to accept radical new design concepts. The fact that the new Primal bass looks as good as it sounds and plays suggests to me that we may have succeeded.”
