Retailer Millers Music acquires Cookes Pianos

Cambridge-based Millers Music has announced its acquisition of a respected piano retailer.

Cookes Pianos, which has traded in the St Benedicts area of Norwich since 1887, will be taken over by Millers, a general music retailer founded in Cambridge in 1856.

Millers managing director, Simon Pollard, explained that during a chance conversation with Steve Battle, director of Cookes, it became obvious that both businesses had much in common with their long history, extensive choice of pianos, skilled sales teams, and high levels of customer service.

Cookes was looking to secure its long term future in the City, whilst at the same time allowing (the late) MD Bill Kilgour to retire.

By coincidence Millers was looking to expand and build on its successful Cambridge store. The opportunity to acquire a well-established business in the region’s largest city was the perfect fit and so the deal was agreed in June but unfortunately delayed after the untimely passing of both Cookes’ Kilgour and Millers’ former owner Barry Robinson.

Battle, who will stay on in the business, commented: “This is an exciting day and we’re really pleased to be working with Simon and the team at Millers Music.

“I am only saddened that Bill couldn’t share another milestone in Cookes’ long and prestigious history. I know he would be thrilled, as would Barry, who coincidentally had looked into buying the Cookes business some three decades before.”

Pollard added: “I personally look forward to working with Steve, his considerable industry knowledge and experience will be of immense value. He, along with Bill, has built a great business in Norwich and a great team.”

Millers was acquired in 2012 by Simon Pollard, former MD and COO of Musicroom.

“It seems fitting that in Millers 160th year we announce this expansion,” he said. “Cookes provides an ideal platform to take our unique Credit and Rental offer out across the region. Millers and Cookes have many similarities, I know there will be many opportunities and exciting developments for both businesses.”
