NAMM 2013: Roland releases new portable recording devices

As part of its big NAMM announcements, Roland has released two new portable recording devices and a new stereo microphone.

First from Roland, the CD-2u is a CD/SD recording and CD burning all-in-one mobile device. The unit has two high-quality stereo microphones built into the front, as well as stereo speakers for listening back, giving it everything you need to create CDs on the go. To create your CD, just set the desired recording level and press record, when you press the stop button, the recording goes onto the CD.

For more versatility, you can also attach external microphones, electronic musical instruments and other devices through the two XLR/TRS combo jacks. There's also a stereo mini-mic jack with plug in power, plus stereo RCA line in jacks.

The CD-2u can also be used as an educational tool for developing music skills as it allows you to independently adjust the audio speed and key (on both recorded audio or from a CD). The A-B Repeat function plays sections over and over while the Centre Cancel function creates minus-one tracks for practice and karaoke. The newly-developed Centre Focus feature isolated centre-located sounds in music tracks to make them easier to hear and learn.

The CD-2u runs on an included AC adaptor of six AA batteries.

Next up, the SD-2u is a powerful, portable tool for musicians, educators and students and combines SD recording with a host of features for music practice and general study. The SD-2u has two high-quality stereo microphones built into the front as well as stereo speakers for playback. There are also multiple inputs for connecting external mics and devices including two XLR/TRS combo jacks with phantom power, plug in power mic jack and stereo RCA line in jacks.

The SD-2u offers much of the same features as the CD-2u including the ability to independently adjust the audio speed and key (on both recorded audio or from a CD). The A-B Repeat function plays sections over and over while the Centre Cancel function creates minus-one tracks for practice and karaoke. The newly-developed Centre Focus feature isolated centre-located sounds in music tracks to make them easier to hear and learn.

The SD-2u runs on six AA batteries or an AC adaptor and includes a wireless remote control.

Lastly, the CS-15RS stereo microphone brings the flexibility of a cardiod microphone's directional accuracy to  field recording. The mic can be powered by an internal battery or via a recorder's plug in power jack. Bundled accessories include a desktop stand, windscreen, 1/4" conversion cable and a handheld grip that doubles as a mic stand mount.

The CS-15RS is a great match for Roland's portable recorders such as the new CD-2u and SD-2u, as well as the R-26 and R-05.
