Musicians to celebrate the accordion throughout June

It’s the beginning of June, which means summer is almost here, Wimbledon is about to take over day-time TV, and the accordion gets some special attention.

In case you weren’t aware, every June is Accordion Awareness Month.

Although “appreciation” would make it sound a little less like alerting people to the effects of a deadly disease, you get the gist. Throughout June, musicians will be encouraged to take some time out to really appreciate the unique instrument that is the accordion.

Accordion Awareness Month was allegedly established in 1989 to help spread the word about the resurgence in popularity in the accordion and to educate people about the instrument.

The accordion still struggles to this day to really catch on in popular music, although you might be surprised to hear Billy Joel, Barry Manilow and guitarist Nils Lofgren are all accordion players.

So, if you’re a retailer stocking accordions, June will be the month to shout about it!

If you have any accordion-related news for MI Pro this month, email it over to Editor Laura Barnes at lbarnes@nbmedia.com

And look out for this month’s Anatomy of an Instrument next week, which will be focused on… you guessed it… the accordion!
