MIRC 2012: Wakeman confirmed as keynote

Prog-rock legend, virtuoso keyboard player, composer and raconteur Rick Wakeman will be the keynote speaker at this year’s MIRC.

Although now best recognised for his various appearances on TV and radio panel shows including, of course, Grumpy Old Men, Wakeman’s career stretches back to the late sixties when he recorded session work which included David Bowie’s Space Oddity and also membership of The Strawbs.

It is estimated that he has performed on over 2,000 different tracks by artistes as diverse as Black Sabbath, Cat Stevens (Morning Has Broken being the most remembered), Mary Hopkins, Cilla Black, Clive Dunn, Elton John, Edison Lighthouse, David Bowie, Lou Reed, Dana, Des O'Connor, Magna Carta, Al Stewart, Ralph McTell, Butterscotch, Biddu and Harry Nilsson.

Musically, he is perhaps most famous for being the keyboardist in Yes but also for his many and varied solo projects which have included concept albums such as The Six Wives of Henry VIII, Journey to the Centre of the Earth and The Myths and Legends of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, which was performed live on ice at Wembley Empire Pool.

In March of this year Rick was awarded a Fellowship of the Royal College of Music and will add further Radio 4 appearances on The News Quiz, more one man shows, plus planned performances of extended versions of  both Journey To The Centre of the Earth and King Arthur in November in South America.

Now in its third year, MIRC will take place at The Brewery, London on Thursday June 28th.
