The store, which opened in 1935 on Music Row (as the block of W. 48th Street between Seventh and Sixth Avenues is known) has served generations of musicians and has been a Mecca for British visitors to New York for decades.
Taken over by Sam Ash in 1999, the store remained the biggest in the street, but fears have grown for its future as rumours that the nearby Rockefeller centre has been greedily eyeing the real estate for expansion plans. Manny's closure, commenters say, might be just the beginning of the end for Music Row.
