The world’s largest music print publisher, the Hal Leonard Corporation, has announced that it will gain exclusive rights to represent in print the catalogue of London-based EMI Music Publishing UK. The deal will enable the creation of many new music publications and digital products for sale throughout the European continent.
Under the terms of the new agreement, which comes into effect on January 1st 2011, Hal Leonard will oversee licensing, editorial, production and administration of the EMI Music Publishing UK catalogue via its new office in the Covent Garden area of London, as well as in co-ordination with the company’s headquarters in Milwaukee. Distribution will be handled by Hal Leonard Europe, which is a joint venture formed in 1996 by Hal Leonard and Music Sales.
Artists on the EMI Music Publishing roster include UK and US superstars such as Arctic Monkeys, Beyonce, James Blunt, Deep Purple, Duffy, Enya, JLS, Norah Jones, Alicia Keys, Pink, Queen, Sting, Kanye West and Amy Winehouse, to name but a few. The deal also encompasses the music of Stevie Wonder and Motown.
The deal was completed by Hal Leonard's president, Larry Morton, and EMI Music Publishing UK president Guy Moot, working alongside European General Counsel Antony Bebawi and SVP of A&R/catalogue Fran Malyan.
With the addition of the EMI deal, Hal Leonard will have exclusive rights to represent the EMI Publishing catalogue on a worldwide basis, thanks to this deal and existing agreements covering North America, Australia and Asia.
“We are thrilled to entrust our catalogue to Hal Leonard,” Guy Moot said. “No other music print publisher can match the level of innovation that Hal Leonard exhibits in connecting songs with an audience, or the quality of craftsmanship in its products.”
“This alliance will enable us to create more new publications than ever before, and reach far beyond traditional markets," commented Fran Malyan. "We look forward to working with Hal Leonard to expand our brand and artists in the UK and Europe.”
Mark Mumford, director of European sales and marketing for Hal Leonard, concluded: “EMI Music Publishing is home to some of the most successful songwriters of all time. Our companies have enjoyed a long and lucrative relationship and we’re most eager to enter the latest leg of the adventure – expanding and accelerating the print presence of EMI writers throughout Europe.”
