Blues rocker finds ideal sound through German speaker simulation unit
Joe Bonamassa has put his name to Palmer's products, particularly the PDI-03 speaker simulator and the PGA-01 Triline guitar router.
It was, in fact, the router that first brought Palmer to Bonamassa's attention, but when he discovered the speaker simulator, while gigging in Sweden, he realised he had the basis for the sound he had always been after. Previously he had been running the mic'd cabs through his monitor wedge, but this often created phasing of different intensities depending on which cab he was switched to.
"This solved all those problems," Bonamassa said. "And any low-end issues at the front of house were sorted, too. You know, sometimes you just don't get any bottom out the front – that was sorted straight away. As soon as I heard the PDI, I thought, 'this is it'."
Bonamassa runs his PDI from his main amp, a Marshall 87 Silver Jubilee model, into his cabs, which are loaded with EV12L speakers. He also runs a Category 5 amp and two Van Bildens, switching between them with the Palmer router.
"The 12Ls give you a warm, inviting sound," he explained. "The problem is that you can sometimes lose the immediacy from them – the speaker simulator solves that problem, too."
Palmer products are distributed in the UK through Adam Hall. A full interview with Bonamassa talking about the PDI-03 can be found on You Tube here.
