Former president of the Steinway Company passes away aged 93

Henry Z. Steinway, the last Steinway to run the celebrated piano making company passed away yesterday – September 18, 2008 – at his home in Manhatten. He was 93.

Steinway, whose death was confirmed by his daughter, Susan Steinway, once said: “You don’t have to play the piano, but do play an instrument”.

Born August 23, 1915 at his parents’ New York home, Steinway was to develop a lifetime love for music, which led to the creation of the board of the NAMM Museum of Making Music, for which he was the first president.
