Classical guitarist named Young Musician of the Year

Eighteen-year-old Jadran Duncumb has become the 2008 Grand Finalist and winner of the string section in the BBC’s Young Musician of the Year.

Born in Sheffield and playing the guitar by the age of eight in Manchester, Duncumb is currently based in Ski near Oslo in Norway and is in his final year at Ski Sixth Form College studying Natural Sciences. He also attends Barratt Due Music Institute in Oslo where he studies in the Conservatoire Class, a programme for a handful of the best young musicians in Norway.

Duncumb has won the Norwegian Youth Music Competition twice, not only in the guitar class but also in the duet class with his brother Emil, who competed in the keyboard semi-final of BBC Young Musician. He is intending to move back to the UK in autumn 2008 to continue his music studies at a UK conservatoire.

Aside from music, Duncumb enjoys reading, skiing, playing tennis, football and snooker.

The young musician’s instrument of choice was a Jose Ramirez, acquired from the Classical Guitar Centre in Birmingham, which his family had flown in especially from Norway. Jose Ramirez instruments can be seen on the Anglo Spanish Guitar Company’s website, at www.spanishguitar.co.uk. The company will also have a stand in the unplugged hall at the London International Music Show.
