Roland Corporation celebrates an unprecedented landmark in compact effect pedals
If ever there were any doubt as to the most successful guitar effects brand, all arguments were laid to rest as Boss celebrated the 10 million landmark in units sold this week.
Roland Corp’s chairman, Katsuyoshi Dan, presented the company’s founder, Ikutaro Kakehashi, with the 10 millionth pedal to roll off the manufacturer’s conveyer (pictured), as work continued towards the next 10 million.
In production for thirty years, the iconic range kicked off in 1977 with the DS-1 Distortion and although other Boss pedals had been available before this, the DS-1 was the first to adopt the recognizable form all Boss compacts have today.
The popularity of the range boils down to three major factors: the quality of Roland’s signal processing technologies, the hardiness of the die cast metal units (all of which carry a five year warranty), and the breadth of the range, which now covers some 37 pedals from the standard DS-1 to the esoteric PS-5 PitchShifter.
