WATCH: Here’s how to turn your old Game Boy into an analogue synth

The Nanoloop Mono is available for pre-order new for €69.

The Nanoloop Mono comes with a step sequencer featuring per-step control for all parameters.

Nanoloop’s latest gadget is an analogue synthesizer built onto a retro Game Boy cartridge.

It seems to be the season for retro gaming tech being fused with musical instruments. Last week we wrote about the Blotendo Harmonicartridge, and today we’re now giving you something to do with that old handheld console gathering dust under your bed.

The Nanoloop Mono comes with a step sequencer featuring per-step control for all parameters. It has 8 banks of flash memory, which can hold 15 patterns per channel, and works with Game Boy Colour and Game Boy Pocket – although the original DMG Game Boy gives the cleanest sound.

On the original Game Boy models, one pin of the cartridge connector functions as audio input, connected to the built-in amplifier. This unique feature lets you generate sound on the cartridge and play it through the headphone output on a completely analogue signal path.

The analogue components (op-amps, comparators, logic cells) of a PIC microcontroller are connected and configured in such a way that they form a hybrid soundchip with 3 analogue filters and a true random noise generator, using only a few passive external components.

The cartridge is a flat but very robust PCB with all electronic parts embedded.

Nanoloop also makes a synth cartridge specifically for Game Boy Advance, and also had an adaptor for connecting a Game Boy with a PC’s USB port – a chiptune maker’s dream.

The Nanoloop Mono is available for pre-order from the makers’ website for €69. It is expected to start shipping cartridges in December 2016.
