Fender unveils limited edition Bob Bain 'Son of the Gun' Telecaster

The 1953 Telecaster was used for riffing the featured sound of the Batman and Mission Impossible themes.

The Fender Custom Shop has unveiled the Bob Bain “Son of the Gun” Telecaster, which will get a limited edition released on April 4th.

Designed to appeal to collectors, players and session guitarists, only 30 units will be available worldwide at select premium Custom Shop dealers.

Legendary guitarist Bob Bain has played on sessions with Frank Sinatra, Nat Cole, Ray Charles, Quincy Jones and many others. He idealises his Telecaster as his number one guitar, and now, Fender Custom Shop’s master builder Paul Waller has created a limited edition reproduction of Bain’s favourite axe.

The 1953 Telecaster was used on 1,000 of sessions, famously known for riffing the featured sound of Mancini’s Peter Gunn, TV’s Batman theme and Lalo Shrifrin’s Mission Impossible theme.

The guitar was built for players who want a versatile and reliable instrument that will allow for years of playing and nostalgia.

At 91-years old – after countless sessions and 22 years playing on the Tonight Show – Bain still playing this guitar. The unique modifications allowed him to play on a huge variety of sessions from rock, blues, jazz, country and more. The innovations at the time were one-of-a-kind and were imitated but never re-created, until now.

The new Son of the Gun Telecaster includes a relic lacquer finish, a two-piece off-center select ash body, and a Maple riff sawn neck with a 5’3 “V” backshape.

It comes with 21 vintage frets, a hand-wound ’51 Nocaster bridge pickup, and a Seymour Duncan ’59 neck pickup. There also Humbucker and single coil pickup options for a large variety of styles.

The guitar also comes with a black phenolic pickguard, and a Bigsby B16 for the moody feel and sound of vibrato.
