Guitar inspiration Bert Weedon dies

Teach yourself guitar pioneer, Bert Weedon, has died at the age of 91.

Weedon was best known for creating the popular tutorial manual Play In A Day, which inspired and taught a generation of guitarists including Eric Clapton, Paul McCartney and Brian May. The book has sold more than two million copies worldwide.

Born in East London, in May 1920, he had been ill for some time and died at his home in Beaconsfield. He was awarded an OBE in the 2001 Queen's Birthday Honours List for his services to music. Aged 12, Weedon picked up his first guitar after convincing his father to buy him a second-hand one from a London market. As a child, he studied classical guitar - a grounding which later enabled him to play any genre of guitar music at sight.

We published his 'Play In A Day' at International Music Publications (IMP) and I met Bert numerous times. The nicest and most unassuming man you were ever likely to meet. A legend in his own right and so under rated in terms of the impact he has had on so many people. He also lived in the same town as me - Beaconsfield - and I often saw in him Waitrose - he never forgot a name and we'd regularly chat about the 'old' days. RIP Bert and Thanks.

A sad loss of a lovely guy. Bert was a regular during my Kingfisher Music Loudwater days and he was always welcome in my store. I started playing guitar many years ago using play in a day. Bert was a great raconteur and I am sure he will be missed by many people in the industry. RIP

'Play In a Day' - my late father's copy was always open on a music stand when I was a kid. I took it to the piano where it was responsible for my earliest exposure to chords and keyboard harmony.
