Fats Domino: Rock and roll icon dies aged 89

New Orleans music legend Fats Domino has passed away at the age of 89.

Known for his piano playing skills and 1950s hits Blueberry Hill and Ain’t That A Shame, the musician and singer sold more than 65 million records throughout his career.

An official from the New Orleans coroner's office has confirmed the death, which was announced by Domino's daughter to a local television station.

Domino was one of the biggest stars of rock and roll in the 1950s. He was one of the first R&B artists to gain popularity with white audiences, and was also an important influence on the music of the 1960s and 1970s.

Elvis Presley once called Domino a “huge influence” on him, and both John Lennon and Paul McCartney have recorded Domino songs.

McCartney reportedly wrote the Beatles song "Lady Madonna" in emulation of Domino's style.
